White Fillings & Composite Bonding
Dental bonding is a technique that has been used in dentistry for many years. Dental composite bonding is a popular choice for fillings because the material can match the shade and translucency of your own natural teeth and provides a much better aesthetic result than amalgam / silver fillings. Bonding is not suitable if you have large cavities in your teeth as the material does not have a strong structure over large areas. Bonding is ideal for small to medium sized fillings that are not exposed to great forces.
The main disadvantages of bonding are that they do not have the strength of other restorative materials such as ceramic or porcelain and they have a greater tendency to stain than your natural tooth or porcelain.
Bonding is used for a variety of cosmetic dental procedures including;
Filling dental cavities-"White fillings"
Replacing metal or amalgam fillings.
Repairing broken or chipped teeth.
Closing gaps between teeth.
Reshaping teeth.
Composite veneers (although porcelain veneers are a better long term option)

Amalgam Removal
We are often asked by patients if they should have their amalgam fillings removed. As an evidence based practice and members of the Australian Dental Association we follow their guidelines.
The ADA policy remains, on the basis of the research available, that the use of dental amalgam produces no harmful effects. The World Health Organisation and the International Dental Federation have released a joint statement confirming the safety of dental amalgam as a filling material. The ADA believes there is no positive gain in having dental amalgam fillings replaced with other materials, other than for aesthetic reasons.
We are happy to remove amalgams for patients that request this for whatever reason but will not suggest or imply that this will cure any other health problems.
